Self-extinguishing silicone-based foam
Project
the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology, ICTP, of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research, CSIC, in Madrid has examined the feasibility of using Baytubes® as a fire retardant additive in silicone based foam. Before preparation of the foams, baytubes® were mechanically blended with polydimethylsiloxane reactants without any previous functionalization treatment.
Results
The flammability of the materials was characterized as a function of the filler content using a standard fire test method. The limiting oxygen index increased as a function of Baytubes® content, attaining the self-extinguishing grade even at a mass fraction as low as 0.5 wt% of Baytubes®.
